Recruiting of users and developers for NetSurf browser

Hello everybody,

I wanted to make some advertisement for an browser project for the more modern Atari machines.
The main target is to provide an reliable, modern browser for the Atari Coldfire machines (acp.atari.org),
but also for CT6x and Atari Hades (etc.) users this project is intersting.
The browser that is used for this target is NetSurf (www.netsurf-browser.org).

This is what the website says about netSurf:
"Small as a mouse, fast as a cheetah and available for free. NetSurf is a multi-platform web browser for RISC OS, UNIX-like platforms (including Linux) and more.

Whether you want to check your webmail, read the news or post to discussion forums, NetSurf is your lightweight gateway to the world wide web. Actively developed, NetSurf is continually evolving and improving.

Written in C, this award winning open source project features its own layout engine. It is licensed under GPL version 2."

Netsurf offers several GUI frontends, some of them are very easy to port.
For the PoC the SDL Version of NetSurf was used.

Currently this project mainly passed the PoC phase successfully.
Altough some people reported networking errors ( which can be avoided by using an proxy), this is an simple but working release.

Haven't got SSL running successfully yet, but the browser & network layer supports that.
It also supports HTML 4.0 and it's strongly going toward HTML5 and JavaScript ( altough the road to java script is long).

The next project goals are the following steps:
1 get rid of the networking problems (low priority, as it works with an proxy and it does not
 trigger with my current setup.
2 successfully use SSL websites with the SDL version
3 create an port that better integrates into GEM, this requires an complete port not just some
adjustments to an current version, so there will be alot code to do ...

Heres my project page with further details:
http://nic-nac-project.org/~monokrom/monochrom.net/atari/netsurf.htm

Everyone is invited to get into the development / testing / documentation etc. !

Thanks for reading,

Atarimania is now an official partner of ST Offline Tournament (STOT) Season #3.

It's an offline gaming league where we play classic ST games. Every round runs for two weeks. Every player can submit as many scores as he/she wants. After the round, every player is awarded with points (first 8 points, second 6, third 4, fourth 3, fifth 2 and all the others 1 point. After the season is over, whoever has most points wins the tournament.

Please note that this is no gaming league just for hardcore gamers so almost everyone can score to top three.

This season we play many old classics like Switchblade 2, Super Cars 2, Lethal Xcess, Arkanoid, Wizball and Turrican 2.

Game for the first round is classic Paradroid 90.

Please join us at Paradroid 90 high score page and submit your score with screenshot. You can play either with emulators or by using a real hardware.

this is the forum for Highwire browser. There are other forums/fora like http://www.atari-forum.com/

STE TOS is in ROM so you cn't hurt it by ejecting a floppy. Try booting with a blank floppy in the drive.

As for the second. Crackling sounds like a lot of power so maybe you have damaged the PSU. That shouldn't be difficult to fix/replace.

jens has pretty much summed it up mate.

RAM and GRAPHICS for a TT are very hard to find and when you do, its mega expensive.

That said, if you find a TT with both a decent ammount of RAM plus a graphics card, then jump at it.

I have both a TT and a Falcon.

The TT has 4MBSTRAM + 4MB TTRAM and is otherwise stock.
The Falcon has 16MB STRAM and 256MB TTRAM and has a CT63

My TT runs 100% of everythign I have tried in it, and to date has never let me dow at all ever.

My Falcon has never been able to run HiSoft Basic 2.10 due to no FPU and when I got the CT63 due to that being very horrible to HiSoft Basic. However, I have found that if I run the ST Version its much better... I have to save everything every 2 minutes "Just in case" but its better.

I mostly use CuBase. Score on the TT and Audio on the Falcon, and I have to say that since I had CuBase Audio patched, its flawless on the Falcon, and putting it simply, its a bloody dream to use, its slick and it does not flicker a jot at all, even when I have tons of data on screen, its still slick. The TT if fine and handles the data many many times better than a stock Falcon, but under the CT63, there is no comparison.

The TT does 640x480 in 16 colours
The Falcon under normal use does it in 256.

However, the display of the Stock Falcon is so god damned awfully slow that its pretty much useless in a multitasking environment when you have loads onscreen, but again, under the CT63, its great.

So, my advise...

If you are not going to upgrade and oyu are going to buy and have done, then maybe a TT might be the one to chose.

If you are planning on spending on it then the Falcon should be the only option.

I will tell you this however...

They are both getting rare enough so its best to jump at the first thing that comes along because the second one might never happen.

Also, if oyu do happen to find a TT that has both a graphics card and a good ammount of RAM, Ill trade you.

I go down to 32Mhz for sure, but I get a graphics card and plenty of RAM
But you get a 66Mhz ( And more, it clocks lovely ) 060 CPU and an Atari machine thats faster than ANY of the clones.

Worth considering!

My first TT did that just fine.

It had 4x1MB SIPPS ( As does this one now ) and it had the 3 Jumpers

I removed the SIPPS, stuck in 4xSIMM Sockets ( Obtained from maplins ) and I used my 4x4MB SIMMS and I swapped the Jumpers over. I swapped all 3 to PINS 1-2 IIRC and it worked fine.

Im bloody annoyed with myself because only about 2 years ago, I sold off one of my TTs as I had just bought the CT63 but I packed up and sent off the wrong TT, so, now my current TT has only 4+4

However...

I have now sourced 4x4MB SIMMS ( Although I sent them to NICK to test them for me and he does not seem to want to give them back ) and the TT currently has the 4 SIPPS, buty Im finding it hard to find the SIMM Sockets.

I think to be honest, that if you have the jumpers W01-W03 isnt it? then oyu should be ok, and of course providing you use Atari compatible RAM too! - Not any RAM works in it just like not any RAM works in an STE.

That's no problem and will do fine.
You just have to open the case, remove the metal shielding (if not already gone) and unplug the resident drive.
Then just connect the Megafile drive and try to get the data off it.
You can leave it inside if you want, as it should be bigger the the SH drive (if not taken out of a Megafile 20, which is quite rare).

Hi,

Can a drive that was pulled out of a non-working Megafile be put into a SH204 case to see if the data can be recovered? If so, is it a pretty simple process or is there a specific series of steps that need to be followed? Are there any other options that I have?

Thanks!
