Hi everyone,

For those of you who have been around the Atari machines for a while, you might remember ANALOG Computing Magazine (and later, ST-Log Magazine). I used to work at ANALOG and wanted to announce something I've been working on with some of the old gang.

We wrote a lot of games for the Atari machines in assembly language back then, which was a lot of fun. Recently, ANALOG's publisher, Lee Pappas, contacted me and asked if I'd be interested in working to port some of our old games to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform. Well, we have started!

We have started a company called ANALOGretro LLC, and have just released our first game on the iTunes App Store. It's called Star Rangers and is an outer-space combat simulator. We have posted a video of it on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TGFP73oaR4 -- You can see what the gameplay is like.

We have started porting other games that originated in the pages of ANALOG Computing, as well, but I don't want to comment on them much until we have them ready to release.

The fun part is that I was able to dust off some of my old source code, fire up my 800 and relive some of the good ol' days with the Atari hardware! I laugh when I think back to the 16K memory limit we had in the 8-bit machines, but they sure were great.

Anyway, I thought this might be interesting to some of your members. Let me know if you have any questions.

Oh, and you might want to check out my ANALOG-related website, http://analog.klanky.com! I have some fun memories blogged there.

I've skimmed the 'net every few years for this one to no avail, I figure it may strike a chord with someone. :-)

There was a VERY short (but dense) Atari Basic demo that took hours to run. When it completed, it would show, drawn in graphics mode 8+16, from a three-quarters perspective, a 3D surface, with hidden lines removed. The final image looked rather like a hat.

I seem to remember it being referred to as "Archimedes Spiral" in the demo.

I recall the article with the program listing had some suggested modifications (disabling hidden line removal made the program run faster) -- I remember the bracketed editor's quote "[It still looks like a hat to me --Ed.]".

I grew up in Michigan, this could conceivably have been from the M.A.C.E. Journal newsletter...

Allen MacroWare's "Printwiz" used the image as their title screen (attached)

Anyone recall this one?

I recently went home to my parents house and found 2 bins of 5-1/4
disks from the mid-80s for my Atari 130XE (although I can't find the
computer and hard drive right now).
I miss all of these games and applications. More importantly I miss
many of the programs in basic I wrote. I truly wonder if all of the
data is destroyed (it has been almost 20 years).
Has anyone found old disks from their Atari that survived such a long
time?
Is there a way I can verify if the data is still preserved using a
5-1/4 disk drive from an IBM PC?
Even better if I can find a way to recover the data if possible and
copy it onto a new 5-1/4 disk, preserving
the file format etc. I would looking to understand my options.
Thanks

Looking for game name

Hi All,

I had a game years ago for my 800 and am looking for the title.

In the game you were a robot and had to stop this "green mold" as it grew around the ship. You could pick up batreries for extra power. At the end you would escape via the escape pod.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Know of a way to copy disks with read errors?

Hi. I've been busy trying to "rescue" the data of a pile of old disks for my Atari 800 XL via SIO2PC interface. Some disks stubbornly refuse to be copied because of a read error in some sector. I would really like to copy some of these disks because they contain stuff that I've written/made myself (BASIC programs, fonts, pictures...) of which I have no backup anywhere.

Does anybody know of a way to copy disks when there is a read error? I've been using the "US Sector Copy II" by E. Reuss which works okay but stops as soon as a read error occurs. Is there a sector copier that will continue copying past a defective sector? Do you know any other (better) disk copy/backup programs?

Thanks for any hint!!
Niels

This idea I had is “instead of useing software to interpret BASIC use hardware.â€

I do not have the skill to develop this idea but is seems a bit of a wast to let an idea go unused. I have even though of a name for it "HI BASIC" for Hardware Interpret. Does anyone want to use this idea.

FREE 8-BIT COMPUTER GAME - THE PROTECTOR!

I wrote a BASIC game 20 years ago, called "The Protector!" It was originally published in the January, 1985 MACE Journel, and shown in AtariAge when they did a story on MACE (Michigan Atari Computer Enthusiasts.)

I used a BASIC compiler on the original program, to create a machine language version of the game. I circulated it as PROTECML on many Bulletin Boards, including my own, the Cutting Board BBS back in the 80's.

It is a lot faster compiled (try HARD!)

I'd like to share the program, which I recently saved from my old Atari disks. I've created an on-line briefcase folder with the machine language version of the program, which can be played on any Atari800 emulator. The file is PROTECML.UDL (the old extension for upload files on an AMIS bulletin board, for those SYSOPS that remember!)

Briefcase Link with File:

http://f2.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/douggeiss/lst?.dir=/Atari&.order=&.view=l&.src=bc&.done=http%3a//f2.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/

For those that don't have an emulator, I've included those files as well.

I put together all the files (and a few more) to run my game, The Protector.

1)Unzip the Atari800WinPLus40Beta file to a directory.
2)Place the atari_roms in the Atari800 folder "roms"
created in step 1.
3) Unzip the other files to the root Atari800
directory.
4) Launch Atari800. Click on "file", then "load
executable" Find Protecml.udl in the Atari800
directory. Select it. Click open.
5) F3 selects difficulty.
6) F4 starts the game.
7) You can change controls by selecting "input"
"joysticks" Default is the numeric pad. (Up=up, fire = enter.)

Game Rules
1. Save the City! Score the most points by shooting
down meteors!

2. You can fire 1 missile at a time. Hitting fire
releases it. If you hit fire again, the first missile
will disappear and a new missile will fire from the
ship.

3. Shoot down meteors with missile. The higher in the
sky, the more points.

4. The city can only be hit 10 times, as each meteor
causes 10% destruction to the city. If you crash into
the city, you cause 20% destruction.

5. You have three ships and three Destructo Bombs. If
all else fails, Press F3 to destoy all meteors on the
screen.

Let me know your high scores!

There is also a demo call VoiceofSilence to show the
Atari's power!!
