Aparently some ppl have trouble starting Conholio; it dies with a "(null):0 - file I/O error" message.

I can't say why this is, but I'm pretty sure it will go away with v0.8 (75% of the project has been rewritten). The workaround is simple; either start Conholio from the TosWin command line (stupid, but works), or auto start it (this has been verified on Thing, don't know about other desktops).

Like I said, this will most likely not be a problem in the future. The bad code is 5 years old and not very pretty, and I've rewritten most of it now.

I've fixed some redraw issues which prevented it from working properly on fVDI (actually I have the impression that it's an fVDI issue, but I made a workaround in Conholio anyway).

There were also some nastyness in 24/32-bit colour which has been resolved now (I couldn't test it earlier).

A new binary will be available here at xaaes.atari.org shortly.

everything works fine - without hassle, when nvdi is installed ( even nvdi1 does the thing, but it is only providing the old-school ST resolutions.)

I can live with it, I just wanted to make it public, if someone encounters the same problem ( screen turns black...) he/she knows what to do :)

I don't have the time to inspect this further, but if anyone want's to do me something that can help, I would try it.

Maybe I should try the CVS xaaes version? I just need a link for downloading ;)

Heya.
There's a tool called BootConf which allows you to change the nvram settings permanently. You can get it here (right-click - save). (BootConf has issues with the [ok] button, so it might be necessary to click it twice to save.)
But your nvram battery might be empty, so the Falcon boots into low res each time you power it on. In this case you'd need to boot to TOS and use BootConf at every coldboot.

> ... 800x608, although I dont know if this can be achieved on a standard Falcon (via overscan or something maybe?)

This can easily be done using Videl inside, Videlity or CentScreen. The Videl will be used at 32 instead of 25 mhz to get this working.
I'm running one of my Falcons at 800x608 in 256 colours.
More can be done with ScreenBlaster (hardware - got 1024x768 myself when trying it) or with a graphics card like Eclipse or Nova.

i've been working on this problem again, to no avail sadly but i wonder if i'm getting closer.

This is what i have just done:

1, wiped C clean except HDDRIVER (properly clean, only one file, HDDRIVER.SYS)
2, installed nvdi v4.1 (ET4000 version)
3, installed FreeMINT again from fresh

boot order is:
nvdi.prg
slct_dev.prg
mint030.prg

I also have a good nvdivga.inf file. I'm not using redirect.prg at the moment as it's not nessecary to get it working.

I can boot and select TT-Med from slct_dev and boot into mint/terradesk with nvdi running using the built-in video output.

I can boot into TOS in either built-in TT or CrazyDots video modes with nvdi.

I can't boot into mint/terradesk when i select any of the CrazyDots modes.

I have tried different entries in the xaaes.cfg file for the 'VIDEO' parameter, nothing makes any difference.

So Mint/NVDI/slct_dev all will work together until nvdi tries to use the CrazyDots card under mint, so there must be something that nvdi is trying to do that mint or Xaaes does not like? I'm running without memory protection so it's not that. Could there be any reason why mint or xaaes might cause problems accessing this kind of hardware?

Thanks for the info Peter, I will have a look for those progs

I recently had an issue with GEMview not finding modules, I think what it actually was, was that the "evaluation" period expired.

I wrote to The guy that made GEMview, after finding the GEMview home page still up, and it turns out, like a lot of previous software requiring registration, you can get a 3.18 version and email the guy for a key

I would like to get Smurf to be a bit more stable, its mostly in the area of the extra config dialogs, an also on certain saved config settings (crashes on load). It also performs "wierdly" after using modules, ie. new 256 images cant be save, as (some) modules use 32bit to do their thing, annoying..

I could not do a flood fill in Vision, but other parts worked fine. The only other issue I have with it, is the lack of IMG/XIMG support. I am sure it is "limited" to only the official formats and structures, but I could not get it to resave a 256 color GIF as a 256 color IMG..

ATM I have ended up using GIMP to create the final image to be converted by a app under MiNT (a 256 color GIF => 256 IMG) working from a 24bit TIF. I even when to the extreme creating "default", "alternat" 256 color, and a "16color" palettes for GIMP (GIMP cant load PAL files..), which has helped for doing "palette remap" and creating new custom images by hand..

Cheers..

Paul
PS I will have some "customizing AFROS" type tuts up soon, with some handy hints on XaAES and MyAeS also (and the tools to get it done).

hmm not a good start..

For XaAES, I suggest, to begin with, use the desktop resolution, not the settings in xaaes.cnf, at least to get things going.

My experience is that the "standard" resolution change dialogs in BOTH TearDesk and XaAES should allow you to change to the proper resolution.

What I can also suggest is a "nvram setter", or one of those other "boot resolution setter" specific to the falcon, to set the default res.

Note, on the current Falcon emu setups I use, 256 color is only available at "40 columns". Note: I do have one setup for ARAnyM that uses 800x608, although I dont know if this can be achieved on a standard Falcon (via overscan or something maybe?)

Unfortunately I dont have Hatari running yet, so I can "check it out" on anything even remotely close to actual hardware

Someone may get around to commenting here, but it is not a hugely active forum, so dont expect "an immediate response"..

If you can get it to 640x480 in 16 colors, then both TeraDesk and XaAES should report the correct rez, and if you dont set via the .cnf, you should also get the correct "change rez" on reboot..
