AtarICQ 0.174 is released

AtarICQ 0.174 is released

Finally! A new release is now available, and for the first time in 4-5 years there is now a new OVL too :)
The new OVL is more than anything else targetting some rather serious stability problems, some of which
where causing problems exclusively under MiNTnet/gluestik, and then there was the one which prevented
aICQ from running on a 68000 cpu. In other worse, this new version should be well worth a closer look,
especially if you have had problems with stability or performance in the past!

A huge thank you goes to Denis Huget who has made this new release possible by his great work on the OVL.
THANKS!

Important changes in the latest release:

   1. AtarICQ is now able to cope with environment variable FONTSELECT when a full path is submitted instead of a process name. If a full path is sent, aICQ then tries to start the font selector (if not already running).
   2. Fixed a bug in the contact list code that under some circumstances would cause a crash when swapping contacts by using up/down ARROWs.
   3. Removed a debug messages that was accidently left in the final 0.173-release. It was a text message written to screen/console.
   4. Fixad a small bug in the code for manually resorting (by dragging) of the TABs in the message window.
   5. New feature added. The shortcut ALT+X will now trigger aICQ to remove all temporary contacts that exist at the time. The main benefit is to be able to quickly sweep your contact list clean from ICQ spammers. (Normally, you have all your contacts on the permanent list)
   6. Slightly changed code for evaluating the status of online contacts. Should avoid confusion when it comes to clients using exotic status values.
   7. New keyboard shortcut, ALT+H, will toggle the hiding of offline contacts.
   8. OVL sources are branched from the 0089 version (newer sources were lost) :(
   9. OVL tweaked to cure problem where a large SSI contact list would potentially cause the OVL to hit an infinite loop (thus freezing)
  10. Speeded up the automatic requesting of basic user info to reval the nickname of UINs loaded from the SSI list.
  11. Fixed a fatal bug which would strike under specific circumstances when requesting basic user info for a UIN, and the server didn't reply. (NOTE: The chase for this particular bug has been going on for 3-4 years, the challenge being that it was very hard to reproduce reliably)
  12. OVL will now work better with 68000 CPU (no more odd address access)
  13. Improved the routines keeping track of server requests, timeout of data, etc.
  14. Fixed a problem with font size in the text input field for outgoing messages, striking under old Single TOS and standard AES/VDI.
  15. Cured a small memory leak which happened when requesting extended user info.
  16. Changed default behaviour:
      -Hiding offline contacts = OFF
-Auto switch to new message = ON
  17. AtarICQ now keeps track of incoming typing notifications, to be able to let them "time out" after a certain time of inactivity from the other end. This time is currently set to 20 seconds, after which the typing notification icon will be removed.
  18. OVL can now successfully send messages to the AIM/ICQ-clone Trillian, which turned out to be rather picky.

NOTE: At this time (2009-09-19) you might notice that some of your friends from your contact list aren't listed as online despite being very much logged on and available. The reason for this is more than likely that AtarICQ still doesn't posses the ability to update the server side list, hence all contacts not present there might be listed as offline at all times. The only way to solve this is to either use another ICQ client to update the list, or hold your breath until AtarICQ is able to do this.. ;)

Oh, and you can find the new release here:

Have fun, and don't forget to share your thoughts on this relese with us,
after all, feedback is what keeps things like this rolling..

I am afraid that the problem preventing online users from not being shown is still there. It can be cured, if you temporarily use another ICQ client to update the server side contact list. (One app that can handle this is Miranda, which is available for PCs)

Unfortunately there are no solutions in aICQ as of yet, we'd need to cure this in the OVL to overcome the problems entirely. Or attempt to do a remake of the OVL, basing it on some existing ICQ library from other clients.

I hope to have better news on this issue sometime, but at this time I don't know when.. :/

Hi all,

As some of you might have noticed already, there is a new version of AtarICQ available. Here is a list of the most important changes:

    * Program license changed to freeware (read more in HYP)
NOTE: Naggings and registration procedure are completely removed.

*A bug that caused RSC objects to be positioned wrongly under MagiC (only when the 3d-rendering of objects disabled), has been fixed.

*There was a bug in the popup menu for opening TABs (CTRL+T), which would result in offline AIM users being listed as offline ICQ users in this popup.

*If the width of contact window was set lower than 100 pixels, the width would be adjusted to 100 at next relaunch of the program. (NOTE: Smallest allowed width is now set to 40 pixels!)

*A number of visual and functional glitches regarding the contact list behaviour, redraws and its sliders has been fixed.

*Several stability issues have been resolved, especially involving the log on procedure as well as contacts going online/offline.

*A bug in the text buffer management has been fixed. The bug would prevent the text buffer from being limited to the value specified in "scrollback".

*AtarICQ now remembers the path of the texture files next time you call the file selector to specify a new background image for contact list.

*AtarICQ will keep track of which TABs were open upon the time of termination, and make sure they are there on next launch of the program.

AtarICQ was uploaded and released during NAS2008. To read more about this years event, check out this URL:

Ok, first problem with 0.172 has been reported. It is unlikely many have seen it though, since it only strikes under MagiC when the 3d-look has been disabled.

Subject says it all..

I had originally planned to wait until this summers NAS (www.sak.nu/nas/) before releasing a new version av AtarICQ. However, after a rather hard hitting bug was recently discovered and fixed I instead decided to get a new release out as soon as possible.

The biggest noticeable addition to aICQ 0.172 is the ability to view GIF images as background in the contact list. This was made possible through a cooperation with PeP, who has been kind enough to supply a very, very nice OVL that decodes and processes the GIF data. Cheers for that!

Example screenshot: http://www.ataricq.org/20080415-aicq.png

Here is a somewhat complete list of changes:

* Implemented support for loading graphics via external load modules in form
of dedicated overlays. (Look into the preferences dialog to set this feature up properly)

* Caching of background images implemented. By default AtarICQ will use a
subdir (/cache) in its own workdirectory for storing the data. To change
this, you need to tweak the cache dir within preferences dialog.

* After loading the GFXGIF.OVL the CPU cache will now be flushed before the client
calls any functions within the OVL. Applies also to aicq.ovl!

* When put in compact mode (F10) the contact list will now use the native
sliders of the AES, including a SIZER widget.

* Clicking the CLOSER widget on contact list while holding ALT-key, will trigger aICQ
  to remove the window TITLE.

* More optimised redraws of the TABs, resulting in much less flickering when
  toggling between open TABs.

* Cookie jar is now read utilizing Ssystem() under MiNT. Under TOS/MagiC, the
  old method is still used.

* Under large gfx resolutions the scrollback setting could easily be
defaulting to a much too small value, in case the message window height was
increased. A check for this is now added after reading the config file.
This problem could be noticed as a very serious scrolling problem, causing
aICQ to lock up pretty good.

* In case COLOR_SELECT is not specified in the environment, AtarICQ looks if
COLSEL.PRG is present in its workdir. (This prg is included in the zip file
  as of the 0.172 release)

Find the new release on the official AtarICQ website:

http://www.ataricq.org/

Enjoy the new AtarICQ, and please share any thoughts on the new release with me!

(a)ICQ problems..

Hi all,

Those using ICQ might have noticed that there have been problems with
their contact lists last few days. Depending on which server you have
been directed to when logging in, your contact list might have only
contained contacts showing as offline. Even if you knew that some of
them were in fact online.

It seems like the reason is that AOL (who are responsible for ICQ
these days) are changing things on the server side to prevent spammers
from exploiting the ICQ protocol. Reports from the Miranda (other ICQ
clone, for PCs) forum suggests that the problem is related to un-
authorized contacts.

Ektus was kind enough to point me to this thread:

http://forums.miranda-im.org/showthread.php?t=16101

If you have contacts on your contact list that has not authorized you
to add them will most likely show up as offline at all times. Try to
re-request authorization and see if this makes a difference! If not,
then it seems like this change is something that actually is pushing
towards the server side list being required in order to use ICQ
clients properly. In the latter case, you could temporary log into
your account using a client such as Miranda or similar, and make sure
all of you contacts are present on the server side list.

I am curious to hear how things work out.

In a little while we should have a better idea of exactly what is
needed to get things going again I hope..

Regards,

This undocumented feature is fine and gets used from time to time by myself and others.
However I'm not too certain you would have to ask Joakim about this but Dan, and Dan still doesn't seem to have time.
There are things more important to fix by him (I heard about a rewrite of bigger parts of the aicq.ovl, and I would think a server feature is ovl related), so this feature might have to stand back (for good reason).

Your idea is fine though. :-)

Hi all.
I happened to 'find' an undocumented feature: the ability to group more than one user into the same tab.
How does it work, it has been described to me by you-can-imagine-who. :-)

Basically, you start chatting with User1, then you drag User2 contact from the list onto User1 open tab, and you do the same with any other user.

This is the first step. This way, you can send a message to User1 and User2 (and User3, ...), and all the messages they write will be displayed in the same message window.

This is great, since ICQ doesn't support this kind of things, so it is a client related feature.

Unfortunately, this is good for User0 (yourself) but is bad for everyone else, because ICQ server will not bounce back the other messages, so User2 will not read what User1 writes, and User3 will not read what User2 writes. :-(

Now, the good thing is that we can 'create' this message spreading behaviour by letting User1 and User2 do the same thing than User0.
This way, everyboudy would have created a group tab for reading and sending message, and anyone else would read all the messages sent.

The problem is:
What if our friends don't have aICQ?
What if they use Trillian? or ICQ? or -insert your favourite client here- ?

SO (and here I am, finally):
Would a "conference" feature seem useful to you, so to ask Joakim to consider adding a "conference server" feature?

This way, only one client would have to create a conference tab, and bounce all the messages around.

What do you think?

Hi all,

Unless you already read about it elsewhere, here you go...

A new AtarICQ release is ready for download with the following noticable changes and additions:

* In some popup menus it was not possible to select an entry in case
either contact list or msg window was also open. Fixed now.

* Fetching of contacts from the server side list had accidently been
disabled in 0.170. It works now, but this needs to be reimplemented
  in the future.

* Found and fixed a small bug that would result in form_wbutton() not being
used under MagiC for handling of mouse clicks in background.

* AtarICQ now use AV_STARTPROG instead of VA_START when:
  1. Asking AV-SERVER to launch the Colour Selector (In Prefs./Contact list)
  2. Asking AV-SERVER to replay sound sample files
  3. Asking AV-SERVER to display history file (CTRL+H)
  4. Asking AV-SERVER to display the help file (HELP)
(This should be good news to people who use other desktops than Thing)

* A right click on an empty place in contact list will open up the popup menu
with a listing of contacts, allowing you to "Create TAB for ".
  (Also available through CTRL+T)

* All popup menus that have window titles will now also have a CLOSER widget.
Also, these popups can now also be moved like any other GEM window.

* Using TAB or UP/DOWN-ARROW to jump to next text edit field in a dialog now
works better under MagiC. SHIFT+TAB will now move focus backwards. Also,
when we hit the last (or first, depending on TAB-direction) editable object
of the dialog, focus will not wrap back to the first (or last) editable
object. (This is in fact a workaround for MagiC's limited implementation of
  FORM_KEYBD)

* Last AtarICQ release had a bug in the keyboard evaluation code that
prevented user to type chars that required ALT-combinations.
  Should be OK now.

* Adapted aICQ to some server changes on the ICQ-servers, making the logging in
process a tad faster, and the updating of the contact list a lot smoother during it.

Have fun, and please don't hesitate to send feedback!
I hope there are a bunch of people out there still using the program, is that so? :)

Regards,

Hi all,

I guess you might have seen the news up on AUN (atari-users.net) or elsewhere already, but I thought I'd mention it here too. This time the release contains a plethora of both small additions and minor fixes, and on top of that a rather sneaky bug, that would on some rare occasions crash aICQ with "Error 090", has been fixed.

More details are listed in readme.txt in the distribution archive.
Download the new release at my webpage:

Do make sure to download this upgrade and while you are at it, please add some feedback here on the forum :)

Joakim sorted out that this has to do with uins that are longer than 8 digits.
As there are other problems as well, this will be sorted out later.
We are in a phase of heavy coding (Joakim) and beta testing (me plus some other guys) atm. ;-)

No new release is ready yet, but the list of changes is slowly growing longer and longer. At the very latest I plan to release a new AtarICQ version at NAS2007.

List of changes since 0.168:

* Now completely ignoring even contacts from server side list,
if they are added to the ignore list in the client.

* If user tries to send an instant msg when the system tab is
active, aICQ will complain and state that messages must be sent to
another contact, not to the aICQ tab :)

(I have received numerous false bugreports about this, ppl have tried
to send messages not realizing they are in the wrong tab) ;))

* The hidden way to call font selector (by clicking the copyright
sign at the bottom of message window) will now no longer result
in Thing locking up if you hold down mouse button for too long.

* Fixed a redraw bug in contact list window which would show itself
when the window was iconified and the active "tab" was being
toggled, and the area of the iconified window was partly
the same as the previous work area of the window.

* After pasting text into message input field (with CTRL+V) the
cursor was not restored. Bug was introduced in the NAS2006-release.

* Sometimes the 'typing notification icon' would get stuck if a user
was in the midst of typing something when he suddenly went offline
for one reason or another. This should be fixed now.

* Fixed 2 places in the code which would result in ILLEGAL AES CALL
  errors under Single TOS.

* Experimental support for viewing IMG-files as contact list background.
Keep a file called "texture.img" in the work dir of aICQ.
NOTE: Not all files will work, might be picky about which app created them!

* New experimental feature: By pressing F10 you can strip down the contact
list window. Nice if you want to make full use of your desktop space! A
second press on F10 will toggle back to normal mode. Note that this setting
will be stored to the config file.

* Right clicking on the system tab (in Message Window) will bring up the
popup where you can change your connection status.

(These changes were in the NAS-release in July 2006)
===================================================

* Forgot to make a few text objects transparent. Now
aICQ looks a bit better when AES uses textures as
  dialog backgrounds.

* Fixed keyboard shortcuts in preferences dialog

* Fixed aICQ to work better with the new floating windows
  of XaAES. (Redraw/clipping issues)

* Removed some stupid debug messages that were printed
to console within the 0.168 release.

Sorry for the slow progress, thanks for your patience!

Hi all,

It is time for a new update - this time the biggest change is the support for mouse scrollwheel and refined appearance under recent XaAES builds. Here is a more detailed list of changes:

* aICQ's message window is now tweaked to look at its best when the
dialog background is using a bitmap texture. As a result of this,
the feature to configure the background fill colour from within the
preferences has been removed. If you wish to tweak the background
colour to a solid fill colour, you should however be able to do so
using your favourit RSC-editor.

* Small adjustment made to popups, fixing appearance under
latest XaAES.

* Scrolling behaviour changed slightly: When the slider is not located
at its bottom position, the text will not scroll to bottom when new
messages are coming in. If located at bottom => follow bottom.

* In addition to the above, aICQ will now need the slider to be
located at its bottom position in order to consider messages
to be read.

* The TABs in the message window are now equipped with a discrete
3D-look when your setup can use >=256 colours. The active tab will
also be enlarged slightly to further allow you to distinguish it
from the unselected ones.

* AtarICQ will now redirect WM_ARROWED messages to the vertical
sliders in both contact list and message window. When a mouse
scrollwheel is rotated XaAES sends WM_ARROWED messages even to
windows that don't have a native slider. This means that at least
under XaAES you can now use your scrollwheel to scroll inside aICQ
windows. AtarICQ also supports XaAES extended scrollwheel messages,
using the WHL_AROWWHEEL mode.

* A bug that would cause display problems in the text input field in
the message window has been fixed. It would only hit if the user had
installed a custom system font, which had different char width/height
than the original Atari font. Should be fixed now.

* Discovered a nasty bug that would cause very bad memory corruption
upon certain incoming messages. The reason was that certain clients
are using a single ascii-13 to indicate a rowbreak.
Should be fixed now.

See info on aICQ website for more info!

Hi Joakim!
|
|
> * In MagiC, setting both SELECTEABLE and TOUCHEXIT for an object
> will make form_button() wait for the mouse button to be released. This
> is now worked around, allowing the setting of auto-away time in
> preferences to work smoother under MagiC.
|
This seems to have the unwanted side effect that for me under MagiC the pop-up on the contact list window will need a total of three clicks to change my online status.
One click to open the popup, and two distinct clicks to select a new status!

With best regards
